July 17 Ride

Imagine Heaven on Earth…what it would look like, feel like and smell like. You probably wouldn’t imagine a trashy little smoke filled bar in the middle of nowhere, with a broken down gas pump in the middle of the gravel parking area. Well, the 100 and something miles it took to get to the Shot Gun Café, along with the juicy cheeseburgers and homemade fries when we arrived were just that…heaven. We rode up the Rexburg Bench and cut over to Teton, then rode to the Grand Tetons and cut north on highway 32 through Felt, then north to Mesa Falls on highway 47 to Island Park. Then Jeff (Rexburg MS bean-counter, throttle-freak) lead us, going mach 100 to the Shot Gun Café so we would make it before they shut off the dining area at 9pm. I played a round of pool and had one of the best burgers I’ve ever put down…and I’ve put down a few.

July 3 Ride - The Big Windmill Ride

Rob Cude came through big time with a feast fit for biker kings and queens! The beer can chickens turned out perfect for us, even though Rob had a little accident in the middle of the BBQ roast. Due to the 4th of July holiday we were a small group this week, but we had perfect weather and a new route to cruise. First we headed over to the Menan Buttes, then to Ucon and towards Bone; the country road east of IF wound up to the windmill farms near Bone. We stopped off for a bit at one of the windmills and it’s incredible how big they are. Everyone had a great time on the Big Windmill Ride

June 26 Ride

This week we had 13 bikes on what is now referred to as the Tornado Ride. Between the twisty roads and the 100 MPH wind, the ride was a freaking tornado. We cruised up University and down the east Rexburg bench to get to Highway 33 for a smoky view of the Grand Tetons. We then rode on a windy, twisty ride on Highway 26 through Lamont, Felt, Drummond and to the Frosty Dive and Diner for burgers and fish ‘n chips.

June 19 Ride

The ride to Mesa Falls was romantic. Weird, but yes romantic. Not so much for me, but there were enough couples on this ride that you felt a little weird going solo when we stopped at the lower Mesa Falls area and checked out the breathtaking waterfalls. Couples holding hands, cooing and awing over the pretty waterfalls. I didn’t even throw up a little in my mouth, like you would think, because I remembered we were still on a motorcycle ride and everyone who came along was really cool. We had a lot of new folks this time. The fajitas before the ride were amazing and the weather was almost perfect too.

June 12 Ride

Lance led us on his hot silver FJR1300 last night because we had to keep up the tradition of a metro-sexual bike at the lead. It was a way more relaxed ride through the countryside. Overall, it was fun, fun just to be out on my bike with other freaks like me. We called it the Sprit of the Road ride because we relied wholly on Lance following the Spirit of the Road for the route because it snowed 5 inches in Island Park the day before and we didn’t want to get our bikes stuck in a snow drift. God loves bikers, because the weather had been horrendous the past few days with 300 MPH wind storms, sleet, hail, snow, rain and sub-zero temperatures. (At least that’s what it seems like when the weather is too crappy to ride my bike.) So the sun came out, the wind stopped and God smiled on my motorcycle just before I pulled my bike out of the garage to meet at the shop. Rob, the Service Manager had some delicious burgers ready to go with the cheetos and drinks. After Lance got done in the mens, we headed out on an adventurous ride through the country. Beaver Dick to Plano, to Egin, back to Rexburg, to St. Anthony (pronounced Saint Anton’ee), then to Teton, Moody and back to Rexburg. The Spirit of the Road led us to a dead end road, a gravel road and a closed road. We flipped around on all occasions, but there must have been a reason that we needed to come in contact with those roads. I think they were lonely.

June 5 Ride

I would have been happy with wieners, but slow roasted BBQ brisket, baked beans and potato salad was the perfect beginning to a great evening. The ride started out with Spider Man leading 13 motorcycles out of the Rexburg Motorsports parking lot; a few Harleys, a few sport bikes, a mix of cruisers and a Spyder leading it all. The Can Am Spyder is made by BRP, the maker of Ski Doo sleds and that thing looks just like a Ski Doo with wheels. A little more metro-sexual than an Idaho hillbilly is used to, as far as ride company goes.

We cruised through some curvy Ririe country roads and then headed toward Swan Valley on highway 26. We stopped at the Rainy Creek Station for a stretch before heading up Pine Creek Pass towards Victor. We spread out a little through the twisties and saw 3 deer on the way up. It was a little chilly, but the snow is pretty well gone, even at the top of the pass (6,800 ft). This was the funnest part of the ride with constant turns up and down the mountain. In Driggs, we stopped at the Chevron. Andy had to check his shorts at that stop after taking an off-roading detour from the mountain road. Everything was OK and we were good to go on back to Rexburg.

On the final stretch it looked like we might hit some storm clouds by Teton, but Mother Nature was good to us and we stayed dry all the way home. Earlier in the day it had rained, and Spyder Man went a little fast on the highway home. I hear Lance might take the lead next week to keep the ride a little more casual and simmered down. As long as there’s BBQ at some point in the evening, I’m good with whatever pace.

Welcome Throttle Freaks!

This blog is for freaks. Not just freaks, throttle freaks. …cruiser or sport, guys or gals, old or young, skinny or fat, redneck or stiffneck, straight or gay, metric or domestic, all kinds of freaks that love riding motorcycles (any kind of motorcycles…even weird looking 3 wheelers are a go). The primary purpose for this blog is for a diverse group of Idaho bikers to share their experiences with the Rexburg Throttle Freaks riding group that meet at Rexburg Motorsports every Thursday at about 5:30 pm and ride about 100 miles. Throttle freaks are also encouraged to share their other motorcycling experiences. For about 6 months of the year, we (fellow throttle freaks) enjoy some of the most exhilarating mountain passes, breathtaking sunsets and wildlife rich forests on our motorcycles. The other six months, we either ride snowmobiles, trailer our bikes southward or dream about the day we will take our bike back on the open road.
